# Claude Watermark Timeline: 7 Dates That Explain the 2026 Rollout

The short answer to when the Claude watermark starts is 2 August 2026, and that single date hides a longer sequence which explains almost all of the confusion still circulating. Some models mark text today. Others do not, and will not until later this year. A public way to check for the mark does not exist for most people, and no date has been given for when it will. The Claude watermark timeline below lays out every date that actually matters, with its source.

## Key takeaways
- Marking started on 2 August 2026 and applies only to models launched on or after that date.
- Models already on the market have until 2 December 2026 to be retrofitted.
- Detection runs on a separate clock and remains in a private preview with no public end date.
- Penalties under the AI Act reach 15 million euros or 3 percent of worldwide turnover, which is why roughly 190 organisations signed a voluntary code.

## The Claude Watermark Timeline in Seven Dates

| Date | Event |
| --- | --- |
| 10 June 2026 | European Commission publishes the Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content |
| 27 July 2026 | Deadline to be listed as an initial signatory, roughly 190 organisations sign |
| 2 August 2026 | EU AI Act Article 50 becomes applicable, the marking requirement takes effect |
| 2 August 2026 | Claude models launched on or after this date support marking, currently Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 |
| 14 August 2026 | Anthropic publishes its watermark FAQ explaining the mechanism |
| 1 September 2026 | Anthropic updates the FAQ with the status of the detection API |
| 2 December 2026 | Legal transition deadline for systems already on the market before 2 August |

Signing the Code of Practice was optional, and the underlying obligation was not. Article 50 binds providers whether or not they signed, and penalties under the AI Act run to 15 million euros or 3 percent of worldwide annual turnover. That is why roughly 190 organisations, including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta and Mistral, signed a voluntary document within a few weeks of each other.

## Why 2 August Confused So Many People

The most common early misunderstanding, visible across r/ClaudeAI in mid August 2026, was that watermarking applied to every Claude model the moment the announcement went out. It did not. Marking applies to models launched on or after 2 August 2026, and every model selectable before that date, including releases from earlier in the summer, predates the cutoff. Model names and release dates move quickly here, which our [Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini comparison](https://learnaitodayonline.com/chatgpt-vs-claude-vs-gemini/) tracks separately.

One widely read post on r/ClaudeAI opened by describing the author's own initial panic, then corrected course after rereading the announcement three times and realising that nothing generated at that moment carried a mark yet. The thread drew 110 upvotes and 96 comments, and its correction matters. A large share of the reaction in those first days was aimed at a rule that did not yet apply to the models people were using.

The position has since moved. Anthropic's Help Center now names Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 as supported, so the answer that was true in mid August is no longer true today. This is the first thing to check before repeating any claim about the Claude watermark, because much of what is written about it was accurate on the day it was published and is not accurate now.

## Why 2 December Matters Just as Much

The AI Act includes a transition period for systems already on the market before Article 50 took effect, running to 2 December 2026. Anthropic has said it is working to add marking to its earlier models within that window, and it has not published a date for when any specific older model gains the capability.

The consequence is that the population of watermarked Claude output keeps expanding through the end of the year, even for people who never switch models. A model that does not mark text today may begin marking it in October without any change in how a person uses it, and without an announcement aimed at that person.

## Detection Is Running on a Separate Clock

Marking and detection are separate systems on separate schedules, and the gap between them is the single most useful fact in this whole story. Marking began on 2 August. Detection has barely moved.

As of the 1 September 2026 FAQ update, Anthropic describes its detection API as being in private preview, available to organisations with a specific legal need to verify compliance. The eligible list covers regulators, law enforcement, media, fact checkers, independent researchers, educational organisations and EU civil society groups, plus enterprises with their own compliance obligations.

_Figure: eligibility is defined by legal obligation, not by interest. Everyone outside the list has no way to check. Source: Anthropic Help Center, "How Claude marks AI-generated content."_

Anthropic plans to expand access and has committed to no public date. Until that changes, a watermark can exist in a piece of text with no accessible way for an ordinary reader, employer or school to check for it, which is worth saying to anyone who claims to have run such a check this month.

## Three Clocks, and How to Tell Them Apart

Three separate schedules are running at once, and conflating them causes most of the confusion about [the Claude watermark](https://learnaitodayonline.com/claude-watermark-explained/).

![Diagram of the three clocks in the Claude watermark rollout, covering marking, detection and institutional policy](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/gfihpee1/production/48d28d581650a4608aa55590bac1b1bd6ea069ae-1526x792.png)

_Figure: the first clock has started, the second has barely moved, and the third has not started at all. Source: Anthropic; European Commission._

The first clock governs which models mark text, and it started on 2 August 2026 with older models joining through 2 December. The second governs who can detect the mark, and it remains in a narrow private preview with no end date. The third, which will matter most in the long run, governs how schools, employers and publishers choose to use detection once it opens up, and nobody outside a small set of eligible organisations has begun to answer it.

Anyone reasoning about this subject should first ask which clock a given claim is about. A true statement about one clock is very often mistaken for a claim about a different one, and [what a detected mark can establish](https://learnaitodayonline.com/what-claude-watermark-proves/), covered in the companion post, is a separate question again from whether anyone can detect it at all.

## Common questions

### Was anything I generated before August 2026 watermarked?

No. Marking applies to models launched on or after 2 August 2026, and every model selectable before that date predates the cutoff.

### Will older Claude models start marking text later?

Anthropic says it is working to add marking support to earlier models within the transition period that closes on 2 December 2026. It has not published a date for any specific model.

### When will the public be able to check for the mark?

No date has been given. Anthropic says it plans to expand access to the detection API over time, and today it reaches only organisations with a legal obligation to verify compliance.
