The 2026 memory crisis is the reason your next laptop, phone or GPU will cost more. RAM prices have more than doubled since October 2025, a mainstream 32GB DDR5 kit that cost under $100 a year ago now sells for around $392 in the US, and the shortage has spread from memory to SSDs to graphics cards. The cause is not a natural disaster or a logistics problem — it is AI. This explainer breaks down the numbers, the mechanism, and the honest forecasts for when it ends.
The 2026 Memory Crisis: How Bad the RAM Shortage Actually Is#
The scale depends on the ruler you use, but every ruler points the same way. J.P. Morgan Global Research estimates DRAM prices will have risen more than 400% from the start of 2024 to the end of 2026. TrendForce reported conventional DRAM contract prices jumped 93% to 98% in the first quarter of 2026 alone, on top of a roughly 170% climb across 2025. In Germany, a retail price index puts DDR5 at about 486% of its July 2025 level — close to five times — and a single DDR4 16GB module went from around $58 in mid-May to a record $81.20 by 21 July.
There is even a historic price inversion: commodity DDR4 now trades at roughly $2.10 per gigabit, while HBM3e — the far more advanced memory inside AI accelerators — contracts at around $1.70 per gigabit. Older memory is supposed to be cheaper. When it is not, the market is telling you that ordinary supply has collapsed.
Why AI Is the Cause: The HBM Squeeze#
The mechanism is simple but counterintuitive. AI accelerators use high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which is made by stacking DRAM dies. HBM is hugely manufacturing-intensive: it consumes roughly four times the wafer area per gigabyte of conventional DRAM, and TrendForce estimates it will swallow about 22% of DRAM wafer input among the three big suppliers in 2026 — while delivering only about 9% of their DRAM bits. By the end of 2027, the forecast is about 30% of wafer input. AI data centres now absorb an estimated 70% of global memory output, up from 20-30% in 2022.

This is why a boom in AI hardware shows up in the price of consumer RAM: Samsung, SK hynix and Micron control more than 95% of DRAM production, and all three have rationally redirected capacity toward the higher-margin AI market. Micron went so far as to exit its Crucial consumer business, and its CEO says the gap between demand and supply across all DRAM is the widest the company has ever seen.
What the Shortage Means for Devices You Buy#
Gartner expects memory prices to climb roughly 130% by the end of 2026, pushing PC prices up 17% and smartphone prices up 13% versus 2025, while PC shipments fall 10.4% and smartphone shipments 8.4%. The pass-through is already visible: Apple raised prices on popular products by roughly 20% citing an "extraordinary surge" in memory demand, Microsoft raised Xbox prices by about 25%, and TechInsights estimates a typical 16GB laptop now costs $40-50 more to build, with smartphones up about $30.

The cheapest devices absorb the biggest proportional hit because memory represents a larger share of their bill of materials: roughly 15-20% for a mid-range phone versus 10-15% for a flagship, and memory is heading toward 23% of a PC's component cost, up from 16% in 2025. Local AI buyers are affected too: the DGX Spark personal AI computer took a $700 price hike, Apple cut the Mac Studio's big-memory options back to around 96GB, and because machines like these have soldered memory, whatever you buy is what you have for the life of the machine.
When Will the 2026 Memory Crisis End?#
There is no agreed date, and the disagreement is informative. TrendForce expects DRAM supply to remain tight through 2027. Intel's CEO has pointed to around 2028 for meaningful relief, while AMD said at Computex 2026 that DDR5 pricing would not normalise until 2028. The most pessimistic warning comes from SK hynix's chief executive, who told Reuters in July 2026 that 2027 will be the worst supply year in the industry's history and that demand will outstrip capacity even beyond 2030. New fabs are the bottleneck: SK hynix's first new cleanrooms open in 2028-2029, Micron's first Idaho fab produces wafers in mid-2027 at the earliest, and NAND investment takes about four years to reach mass production.

There is a counter-case: Morningstar argues new capacity arriving in 2027-2028 could improve supply, and China's CXMT is scaling domestic DRAM production. But the capacity timelines are physical facts, and they do not allow a fast resolution.
What You Should Do (and Not Do) Right Now#
The practical advice is unusually simple. If your PC already has enough memory, do not panic-buy at shortage prices — there is no prize for owning 64GB you will not use for three years. If you genuinely need a build, a repair or a new machine, earlier is likely cheaper than later: Gartner expects PC replacement cycles to lengthen by 15-20% as people rationally keep existing hardware longer.
When buying, right-size (16GB is still a usable baseline, 32GB the comfortable target for gaming, 64GB only for real workloads), compare latency as well as frequency, and consider that a pre-built system can occasionally beat a DIY basket because builders bought memory before the steepest increases.
